||Background: Many interventions have been developed to provide life skills training for youth with physical disabilities. However, there is a need to determine the effectiveness of life skills programs.
Objective: To conduct a systematic review of research on skill programs designed to help youth with physical disabilities prepare for adulthood.
Search strategy: Studies were found by conducting a search of electronic databases from 1985-2006 (HealthSTAR/Ovid Healthstar, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and ERIC). The reviewers used a variety of search terms related to life skills and physical disabilities.
Selection criteria: Studies that meet the following criteria were included: (a) empirical research on the effectiveness of life skills program, (b) included a comparison group, (c) reported at least one outcome measures, (d) focused on youth between 12-21 years of age, and (e) published between 1985-2006.
Data collection and analysis: Two reviewers screened and independently coded each study. After the coding process, all of the researchers sorted the studies based on types of intervention and finalized conclusions regarding program effectiveness.
Main results: Six studies met the inclusion criteria for this review. The authors reported program features, intervention strategies, and methodological features. A meta-analysis was not conducted due to the heterogeneity of the interventions and range of outcome measures.
Conclusions: There is some support for the use of multi-component interventions for developing life skills among youth with disabilities. However, there are relatively few rigorously designed, published studies that have evaluated the effectiveness of life skill programs.
