Knowledge Translation Training and Tools

A well-developed knowledge translation (KT) plan is a proposal requirement for health research funding for many funders in North America and abroad, and there is greater attention to research utilization and research impact in many aspects of disability and rehabilitation research. Dr. Melanie Barwick will discuss developing a KT plan in order to increase the impact and reach of research findings to a variety of knowledge users. She will review the state of the scientific evidence for KT strategies and introduce the Knowledge Translation Planning Template© (Barwick 2008, 2013), a tool that can assist with the planning process.

The 'Payback Framework' explained

The Payback Framework is a research tool used to facilitate data collection and cross-case analysis by providing a common structure and so ensuring cognate information is recorded. It consists of a logic model representation of the complete research process, and a series of categories to classify the individual paybacks from research. Its multi-dimensional categorization of benefits from research starts with more traditional academic benefits of knowledge production and research capacity-building and then extends to wider benefits to society.

Ultimately, it confirms the applicability of the methods for a full study that should enable the Arthritis Research Campaign to demonstrate the outcomes from its funding and provide it with evidence to inform its own policies. - Conducting retrospective impact analysis to inform a medical research charity’s funding strategies: the case of Asthma UK

This paper describes the various impacts identified from a range of Asthma UK research, and explores how Asthma UK utilized the characteristics of successful funding approaches to inform future research strategies. The authors systematically demonstrate that all types of funding approaches included in the study are making an impact at different levels, but that the main societal impacts from projects and fellowships come from a minority of those funded.
