Abstract: Reviews 10 studies (6 RCTs and 4 uncontrolled) of the effects of Pilates exercise training (PET) on physical fitness, balance and fall prevention in the elderly, and its effects on mood states, quality of life (QoL) and independence in ADLs. Finds large effect sizes (ESs) for muscle strength, walking and gait, ADLs, mood and QoL, a moderate to high ES for dynamic balance, and small ESs for static balance, flexibility and cardio-metabolic outcomes. Suggests that PET be prescribed as exercise for the elderly.
