About the series:

The KTER Center recently developed two scoping reviews related to pre-employment transition services for students with disabilities, and job-related social communication skills of adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The research these reviews identified can inform vocational rehabilitation (VR) services to help clients succeed in getting jobs and keeping them. Pre-employment transition services for students with disabilities

The objective of this scoping review was to identify studies related to pre-employment transition services the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) outlines. The review offers information that can inform the development of strategies for VR counselors seeking to help students with disabilities find and maintain employment. It focuses in particular on job exploration, work-based learning, job exploration counseling, and self-advocacy.

Job related social communication skills of adults with autism spectrum disorder

The objective of this scoping review was to identify interventions that have been successful in helping people with ASD achieve optimal employment outcomes through developing and applying evidence-based strategies to improve social and communication skills. We focused especially on studies of strategies that can be applied by VR counselors and employment specialists who work with people with autism. The scoping review identified four kinds of promising strategies to help adults with ASD, including: interviewing skills, on-the-job social skills training, self-advocacy, and compensatory strategies to aid learning on the job. ​

About the presenter:

Jeremy RasmussenJeremy Rasmussen is a Technical Assistant Consultant at the American Institutes for Research (AIR). His work with the Center on Knowledge Translation for Employment Research (KTER Center) includes writing literature reviews, research syntheses, other technical writing, and general project management. He also serves as a product development manager for the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC). Rasmussen holds an M.A. in English from DePaul University.
