Abstract: This review analyzes 4543 randomized controlled trials that determined the effectiveness of physical interventions for people with spinal cord injury (SCI). To meet inclusion criteria, trials must have examined fitness and strength training, gait training, hand therapy, stretch, acupuncture, hand splinting, and other related therapies. Two independent reviewers assessed methodological quality using the PEDro scale. Of the thirty-one trials included in this review, six reported a between-group mean difference with an important treatment effect on at least one outcome measure. These trials supported the use of acupuncture, fitness and strength, and gait training. This review provides initial evidence to support the effectiveness of some physical interventions for people with SCI.
