Background: Infertility is a major issue for individuals following a spinal cord injury (SCI).
Objectives: To conduct a systematic review on sexuality and reproductive health following a SCI.
Search strategy: The authors searched MEDLINE, PreMEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, SocioFile, and PsycINFO through 2003. In addition, the authors collected relevant associations’ conference proceedings.
Selection criteria: The authors selected published and unpublished studies with pre- and post intervention fertility measures or original measurements of fertility rates for individuals with a SCI. The authors considered articles regardless of language. Single case studies and opinion articles were excluded from the review.
Data collection and analysis: Two authors screened and assessed the quality of each study using the Jadad scale, Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, or an adapted instrument. Disagreements were resolved by consensus. Studies were categorized by research design. The authors conducted qualitative and quantitative data synthesis.
Main results: 66 studies that focused on males with SCI were included in the review. No study with females met the inclusion criteria. The authors summarize findings on: (a) semen harvesting, (b) pregnancies and live births, (c) comparison of fertility rates using electroejaculation or vibration, (d) freezing a new patient’s sperm, and (e) sperm quality.
Conclusions: Many studies were excluded from this review because of incomplete reporting. Researchers should comply with international reporting standards for medical research in order to facilitate the comparison and analysis of trials and reporting of best practices. |
