John Abbate is a research assistant in the Center for Rehabilitation Outcomes Research (CROR) at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, where he supports research in the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Home and Community-Based Services. His expertise lies in translating complex information into plain language. In addition to working at CROR, Mr. Abbate is a disability rights advocate and peer navigator at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Applied Health Sciences, where he works with people with newly acquired disabilities. He completed his undergraduate degree and earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Illinois at Chicago. As a wheelchair user, Mr. Abbate approaches his work through his own lived experience.
