Susan Clarke-Tizzard

Coming from a long line of military members, Susan Clarke-Tizzard joined the military in 1983 and served in Canada and overseas until she retired in 1994 due to injuries. After moving to Cape Breton, Ms. Clarke-Tizzard had several jobs and positions, yet her main pleasure was volunteer work. She has many different interests and was able to fulfill them through a myriad of volunteer opportunities. In 2014, Ms. Clarke-Tizzard’s mother died of lung cancer. It was a devastating blow, especially after learning that a specialist who reviewed her mother’s case declared that it had been mismanaged. Unable to move forward for a period of time, Ms. Clarke-Tizzard decided to do something positive to honor her mother’s memory. She chose to become a Patient/Family Advisor with the Nova Scotia Health Authority. In this role, she consulted on many working groups and committees, bringing the perspective of the family and patient to the forefront. During the COVID19 pandemic, Ms. Clarke-Tizzard was asked to consult on several research projects that involved veterans. Having been born into the military culture and remained within it as an adult, she decided to help fellow veterans by assisting civilians in understanding the unique culture of the military. Through all of her volunteer work, Ms. Clarke-Tizzard has experienced great joy in working with different people and learning so much from them.
