Alfiya Battalova holds a PhD in disability studies and a Master’s in Public Administration. She is an assistant professor in the School of Humanitarian Studies at Royal Roads University (RRU) in Victoria, British Columbia. Prior to joining RRU, she worked in several disability and health non-profit organizations, including Spinal Cord Injury BC, Social Planning and Research Council of BC, and Pacific AIDS Network, and she supported program delivery and program evaluation in the areas of peer support, accessibility planning in municipalities, and substance use and mental health. Dr. Battalova’s research interests include community engagement, disability and social policies, and health equity. She has published articles in Qualitative Health Research, Social Science and Medicine, Disability and Society, Disability Studies Quarterly, and other journals. She serves on the boards of community organizations that advocate for people with disabilities in local municipalities and promote active living and sport participation for people with disabilities. As a person with a disability, Dr. Battalova draws on her personal experience, and she is committed to community-based research and practice that promote disability justice.
